The Stepp Bison is extinct. Steppe Bison remains have been found preserved in permafrost in Alaska. Wood bison are native to Alaska and larger than plains bison. But Plains bison were introduced into Alaska in 1928 and now live in 4 locations in Alaska. Reintroduction of Wood bison to Alaska occurred in 2015 at the Lower Yukon/Innoko Rivers .
Wood bison top. Plains bison bottom. Steppe Bison is extinct.
I have visited the Vore buffalo jump in Northeastern Wyoming. There are dozens of buffalo jumps scattered across North America.
As the Transcontinental and other railroad lines transected the North American West, bison hunting and slaughter decimated the herds. The Northern Pacific Railroad line was completed in 1883 (not shown on this graphic). The Canadian Pacific Railroad was completed in 1885 (not shown on this graphic). By the late 1880's there were fewer than 600 plains bison left with most kept on private ranches. Only about 25 were left in the wild in Yellowstone park.
